TRACKLISTING AND EXTRA INFORMATION
Labels
Black and Yellow Parlophone in design with "The Parlophone Co Ltd" perimeter text. As this is an original 1963 pressing there is no 'Sold in the UK' text across the centre of the label.
The label still has the Dick James Music credit for Please Please Me & Ask Me Why. Early versions of this label still had '33 1/3' left over from the black & gold design. This copy does not but still lacks the 'Recording First Published' text of the fifth press.
Clearly readable silver text with no blemishes or fading & striking yellow Parlophone logo & no obvious spindle marks, indicating little play.
Most of the fourth press issues still retain the extra '33 1/3' print from the black & gold label design, but this one does not. How rare it might be is unknown, but this is only the second copy we have ever identified in over thirty five years of trading.
Matrix numbers
The matrix numbers on both sides finish -1 indicating that this copy was among the first pressed:
Side One XEX 421-1N
Side Two XEX 422-1N
It has long been believed that the last black & gold labels were being used at the same time as the first black & yellow labels, but on different presses.
The Vinyl
The vinyl is in a decent VG condition with light signs of play which have have no effect on play. The vinyl retains it's original shine despite being over fifty years old. This is highly unusual as many copies of this album were played excessively at parties during the 60's and many became damaged or badly scratched.
The EJ Day front laminated picture sleeve has the large block 'mono' logo on the front and 'Photo: Angus McBean' credit in bottom right hand corner, with undamaged spine and medium scuffing to flipbacks and edges.
The sleeve shows edge and corner creasing with a previous owners name neatly annotated to the reverse and the spine text still clear and undamaged, with some signs of laminate lift.
A nice copy of this rare label variant.
