The Vinyl
The black and yellow Parlophone labels have just a few very faint spindle marks around the centre hole to show it has been played, but not to excess, and still have vivid colours with clear text. The vinyl itself shows barely a trace of play leaving it so close to Near Mint that it hurts, but we will have to settle for Excellent.
The matrix numbers are XEX 637-1 on side one and XEX 638-1 on side two.
The Sleeve
The 'Fourth Proof' sleeve is one of the first copies of Sgt. Pepper to have run off of the presses at EMI as just a very small number were made up for final review by the Beatles prior to full scale printing. These were put back into stock and used with the regular sleeves on the first part of the initial run.
Figures vary, but range from a very small fifty or so to a thousand. My estimate would be from one to a few hundred, based on an economical quantity to print of sufficient size that they were then passed to the production stage rather than being destroyed.
What is also of note is that in over thirty years of actively seeking things like this out, this is just the sixth one of these to have turned up. This would suggest that one to two hundred only is the most likely figure.
The Garrod & Lofthouse internal flipback, fully laminated picture sleeve is graded as Excellent; there is a 0.5cm tear to the opening and corresponding small crease, but is very hard to spot indeed. As already mentioned this has 'Fourth Proof' text on the back flipback in the right corner along with 'AR' & 'D1321' printed on the left, the back is also printed with the patents pending credit after the manufacturs name. This was not intended to have been made into a production sleeve and is now very sought after.
The flame inner shows minimal creasing and no tears or splits.
We never like to say never, however will we see another copy as nice as this? I wouldn't like to bet on it! If you don't grab this whilst you have the chance, don't say you weren't warned!
