TRACKLISTING AND EXTRA INFORMATION
Background
The album was released on August 5th, 1967 and one month later it was released in stereo. The album's title comes from the title of the seventh chapter of Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'!

The mono mixes of each track were completed at separate sessions, as it was the main format. The whole stereo album mix was a one day thing, so this really is the definitive version of this classic album with significant differences to the stereo.
Subtle changes in effect abound, moment to moment gradations that can alter the flow of an entire track. For example, Syd Barrett's whoops and shouts on 'Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk' are simply dripping with delay and the environment constantly morphs, unlike the stereo version which is 'fixed'.
The coda of 'Flaming' is shorter than on the stereo version, as is 'The Gnome'. There's a whole layer of organ missing on the stereo mix at the start of 'Interstellar Overdrive' with a bongo fade-out and seriously different parts in 'Pow R Toch H'.
As the engineer said many years later "The omission of things in the stereo mixes was really just because of the time - or lack of it - spent over these"
Mono was the de-facto standard and the stereo mix, like 'Sgt Pepper', was pretty much cobbled together as an afterthought.

Condition
The Sleeve :-

The sleeve is in Excellent condition. The back cover does not have the later 'File Under Popular: Pop Groups' text & is manufactured by Ernest J. Day & Co. & dated '6709', just creeping into the period of the first release of the stereo version. The front of the cover has just a couple of creases in the laminate with just a little wear to the non-laminated back. There are no tears or writing & the original black & white company ad inner is enclosed, a highly presentable example.

The Disc :-
The labels are the blue and black Columbia design with "The Gramophone Co Ltd" and "Sold In UK Subject To" text, with sharp, vivid print and logos. The 'KT' tax code is clearly visible on Side One. There are a few spindle marks by the centre hole to show play, mostly on side 2.

The matrix numbers are :
XAX 3419-2 On Side One
XAX 3420-1 On Side Two

Vinyl :-

The vinyl is clean & plays to an Excellent standard. We have professionally cleaned both sides & play tested the vinyl - on a mono playback setting, there is very little surface noise inbetween tracks & no distortion. Visually, there are some faint hairlines & surface scuffs noticeable under a bright light either side, leaving the vinyl a healthy EX-/VG+. Note: there are no jumps or sticks but a tiny mark at the beginning of 'The Scarecrow' causes just a couple of faint clicks on rotation during the intro to the song, not spoiling the overall enjoyment of this fantastic album. The condition of the sleeve alone would make this a very proud looking example for a collector, fully deserving of a prime spot on the shelves. Although far from mint, here is a nice NM[sleeve]/VG+[vinyl] example of this British original that is currently highly in demand with our customers worldwide...
