The Payback  was originally scheduled as the soundtrack to the  blaxploitation movie Hell Up In Harlem, but was bizarrely  rejected by the director as 'not James Brown enough'.  Obviously that man had cloth ears, as this is now considered a  high point in JB's career and a landmark funk album, featuring  cyclical grooves and jamming with edges of softer blues  creeping in.
