TRACKLISTING AND EXTRA INFORMATION
Eric Clapton's first studio album since 2010 features two new original songs and a collection of some of the guitar virtuoso's favorite songs that highlight his vast appreciation and knowledge of music. From Leadbelly to J.J. Cale, Peter Tosh to George Gershwin, Hank Snow to Gary Moore and Taj Mahal, this record is a celebration of so many who have inspired Clapton's rich musical life.
Clapton is playing favorites here with old friends, both musically as well as accompanying him. There's Peter Tosh's "Till Your Well Runs Dry", standard jazz ("All of Me"), and, of course, the blues (Lead Belly's "Goodnight Irene"). Paul McCartney sings and plucks the bass on "All of Me." Drummer Jim Keltner sits in on "Our Love Is Here to Stay." R&B icon Chaka Khan lends her pipes to "Get On Over." Old pal Steve Winwood hits the organ on "Still Got the Blues." And longtime collaborator J.J. Cale drops by for "Angel."
The album explores romantic standards of the '30s, reggae, soul and rock, plus Clapton's own Bushbranch Records label is handling the release, completing the return to his roots in full-circle fashion. Two brand-new original numbers round out the down-home set, the 21st overall studio affair from the influential touchstone.
In the 100 Greatest Artists issue of Rolling Stone, E Street Band member Little Steven put it best: "Eric Clapton is the most important and influential guitar player that has ever lived, is still living or ever will live. Do yourself a favor, and don't debate me on this. Before Clapton, rock guitar was the Chuck Berry method, modernized by Keith Richards, and the rockabilly sound--Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins, Cliff Gallup — popularized by George Harrison. Clapton absorbed that, then introduced the essence of black electric blues: the power and vocabulary of Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin and the three Kings — B.B., Albert and Freddie — to create an attack that defined the fundamentals of rock 'n' roll lead guitar."
