MILFORD GRAVES & DON PULLEN Nommo (Very rare original 1967 US three-part private press vinyl LP on a dark blue & yellow SRP label, the second volume of the 'In Concert at Yale University' recording and one of America's first DIY Free Jazz records. This collector's example was obtained from Jazz Journal's Barry McRae's personal collection. As a British writer for Jazz Journal for many years, 'Bazzer The Jazzer', as he was to become affectionately known, built up a massive collection ofjazz vinyl of all kinds. Many were review copies, others signed gifts from musicians, or promo copies, in addition to the enormous number of records he bought for himself over the years. The heavyweight pasted picture sleeve even includes the super rare two page document, one A4 page for Graves and one page for Pullen that present SRP Records and describe the music. See 'more info' for condition details... LP-290)

Recently subject to a fascinating documentary film, they say Milford Grave's drumkit was homemade & that he rarely ever ventured outside of his NY Queens neighbourhood to perform. Here is a man that believed his instrument - the drums - was capable of far, far more than just timekeeping. Pullen performs a similarly percussive approach to the piano & the results are not for the faint of heart. This is the polar opposite of your cosey Prestige or laidback Blue Note date, Nommo is a rare documentation of Milford Grave's work & is about as raw & unhinged as it gets, a volcanic Freeform firestorm that ended up on a memorable 'Top Ten Free Jazz Underground' list written by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, who shares a similar life long passion. Dare you take up the challenge of Milford & Don's art?
Condition :-
The pasted card picture sleeve grades Very Good with no deletion cuts or writing. The cover is fully intact, despite some natural paper fracturing around the edges. Note: there is a 3" split in the bottom edge as well as a small 1" split in the bottom right corner edge, a common find with American jackets of this vintage. Nonetheless, this is a lovely original example with both panels clean & clear. There is a small annotated price sticker and a shop catalogue sticker colour coded in the top right corner.
The super rare two page document is enclosed, one A4 page for Graves and one page for Pullen that present SRP Records & describe the music. This remains in excellent condition with no writing or tears.
The heavyweight vinyl grades Excellent - visually there are just a few faint cosmetic / surface scuffs, typical of private pressings of this era. The record has been played only a small handful of times and comes highly recommended. But only for the headstrong!
