Background:
By 1969, Mono was pretty much dead and most albums were beginning to be released in Stereo only. This was, in fact, the last Beatles album to be released in Mono. The very first sleeves for both the mono & stereo releases omitted the printer's credit and patent number information. This was quickly corrected, but a copy without this information can be considered a 'first' first.
In actual fact, there were no subsequent issues of the Mono release, so all mono vinyl is first [and only] issue, with the sleeve being the only real variable.
This was also the first Beatles album that failed to hit number one in the UK album charts, which means that it sold in nowhere near the numbers of previous releases.
Condition:
The sleeve on this copy remains bright as day, with clearly readable pinched spine and little discernable shelfwear. Even the unlaminated back shows very little of the usual discolouration and is free from writing or other defects. Along the top flipback there is a tiny red mark and a little ringwear visible - that's it in terms of any 'fault', this is a truly exceptional example.
In common with all early sleeves, this has the text topped and tailed by red lines. All flipbacks are strong and secure and, as mentioned earlier, there is no printer's credit on the bottom flip, indicating the first issue sleeve.
The black die cut inner is the same as you would find in the White Album [there is some suggestion that EMI, ever the cost cutters, had lots left over from the White Album and used them on Yellow Submarine and Abbey Road!]. This inner is beautifully flat with just the very lightest of wear.
The labels are the usual dark green Apple of the period, with 'Sold In The UK' text above the title.
The vinyl remains in Near Mint condition, with just light surface blemishes visible under strong light to show for its fifty three years. By the very nature of the heavyweight vinyl and the mono reproduction, these have no effect upon play whatsoever.
There are no spindle marks around the centre hole, indicating that this genuine one owner copy was never played.
A fantastic copy of this super rare first [and only] mono issue not in superb condition throughout!
